Few hot hatches
encapsulate the spirit of early-1990s performance motoring quite as successfully
as the Renault Clio 16V. Lightweight, agile and powered by Renault's eager
1.8-litre 16-valve engine, these cars earned a deserved reputation for their
sharp handling and entertaining driving experience, becoming one of the defining
hot hatches of the era.
First registered in August 1993, this Clio 16V is
powered by the sought-after 1,764cc 16-valve engine that made the model such a
favourite among enthusiasts. Combining lively performance with compact
dimensions and wonderfully direct handling, it remains a hugely enjoyable
driver's car more than 30 years after it first appeared.
Showing 85,194
miles and in the current ownership since 2012, the car has clearly benefited
from significant investment and sympathetic maintenance. Most notably, the
cambelt was replaced only a few hundred miles ago, supported by accompanying
documentation. The car also benefits from a stainless-steel exhaust system and
has been lowered on Eibach sport springs, enhancements which suit the character
of the car well.
The bodywork has received substantial attention,
including replacement sills and wheel arches followed by a full respray, helping
to ensure it presents far better than many surviving examples. Complementing the
smart exterior are a set of beautifully refurbished alloy wheels which really
lift the overall appearance and give the car the sort of sharp, purposeful
stance these Clio 16Vs deserve.
The history file includes the V5C, a
current MOT valid until June 2027, a previous MOT certificate, a copy of the
owner's handbook and a collection of invoices documenting maintenance and
improvement works. Included amongst the paperwork are receipts relating to the
installation of a Category 1 Thatcham alarm and immobiliser, together with
evidence of recent brake work and other routine maintenance.
During its
time with us, the Renault has started promptly and driven without issue for both
photography and video purposes, further reinforcing the impression of a
well-sorted and usable example.
Fast disappearing from British roads and
increasingly appreciated by collectors of modern classics, the Clio 16V
represents a golden era of hot hatch design. Refreshingly rare to find in this
condition, with sensible upgrades, excellent recent maintenance and a smart
cosmetic presentation, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a very usable
slice of 1990s motoring.
