If ever there was a vehicle to prove Toyota's legendary
reputation for durability, this Land Cruiser Amazon is surely it. Showing an
astonishing 356,000 miles, it remains a superb testament to just
how well these hugely capable machines stand the test of time when properly
maintained.
Finished in an attractive metallic burgundy with
a contrasting beige interior, this desirable GX TD is made all the
more appealing by its increasingly scarce five-speed manual
gearbox. Most Amazons were specified with automatic transmission,
making manual examples something of a rarity today and increasingly sought after
by enthusiasts who appreciate the greater driver involvement and mechanical
simplicity.
Its early maintenance history is particularly
reassuring. Servicing began with Toyota Motorline, Kent, where six
dealer stamps were recorded between 2002 and 2003, covering around 20,000 miles.
A further 15 service stamps take the history through to 2011, by
which time the odometer showed 238,811 miles.
While no subsequent
servicing is recorded in the book, the vehicle has continued to pass annual MOT
tests with the mileage increasing steadily to the current figure of 355,888
miles. The current MOT runs until May 2027 and,
notably, carries no advisories.
Supporting
paperwork includes an invoice from 2024 for replacement rear brake calipers,
rear brake pads and a new alternator, demonstrating that maintenance has
continued despite the later service history not being
documented.
Cosmetically, the Amazon wears its mileage
honestly. There are the expected stone chips, light scrapes and areas of surface
corrosion around the lower bodywork and rear arches, together with some scuffing
to the rear bumper, all entirely in keeping with a vehicle designed for hard
work rather than polishing. Importantly, it presents considerably better than
many contemporaries and retains a very straight, original
appearance.
Open the door, however, and perhaps the biggest
surprise awaits. The interior is remarkably well preserved for the mileage, with
the seats, dashboard, switchgear and trim all wearing exceptionally well. It is
immediately obvious that its six previous keepers have taken
genuine pride in maintaining the vehicle, resulting in a cabin that belies the
odometer reading and remains a comfortable place to spend long
journeys.
Powered by Toyota's renowned 4.2-litre 24-valve
turbo diesel six-cylinder engine, producing around 201bhp and over
430Nm of torque, the Amazon has earned an enviable reputation worldwide for
longevity, refinement and effortless towing ability. These engines are widely
regarded as capable of exceptionally high mileages when serviced correctly,
making this example a fitting ambassador for the
breed.
Whether sought as an immensely usable classic 4x4, an
overlanding platform, a dependable tow vehicle or simply as one of the finest
examples of Toyota's engineering philosophy, this manual Amazon represents
outstanding value. It is a vehicle that has already proved its durability beyond
question and, with sensible ongoing maintenance, should still have many
adventures ahead of it.
