The Fiat/Bertone X1/9 SE
represents the final chapter of one of the most distinctive and enjoyable small
sports cars of the 1980s. Designed by the legendary Marcello Gandini, the X1/9
combined striking wedge-shaped styling with a mid-mounted engine, agile
handling, and the practicality of a removable targa roof, earning it the
affectionate nickname of the "baby Ferrari."
Offered here is a
1988 Fiat X1/9 Bertone SE, first registered in August 1988. Finished in metallic
blue with a sporty cloth interior, it is powered by the lively 1,498cc engine
paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car has had five former keepers and
has been with its current owner since June 2003.
Benefiting from the
unique multi-spoke alloy wheels, and removable targa roof. A valuable second
hardtop roof also accompanies the car, offering additional practicality and
year-round usability.
The history file includes
invoices documenting maintenance and work carried out over the years, together
with an impressive collection of 22 previous MOT certificates. The current MOT
is valid until May 2027.
To demonstrate its
roadworthiness, the Fiat was driven over 45 miles to our premises, performing
exactly as expected throughout the journey. It started readily, drove well, and
behaved impeccably during the photography session and accompanying video
recording.
Presented in good overall
condition for its age and mileage, the bodywork shows only the sort of minor
cosmetic marks you would expect from a well-used classic. The cloth seat
upholstery has deteriorated in places, a well-known and common issue with these
models, and prospective buyers may wish to have this attended to in due
course.
Increasingly collectible and
offering the engaging driving experience that only a lightweight, mid-engined
sports car can provide, this is an appealing modern classic with excellent
provenance, long-term ownership, and the benefit of an extensive MOT
history.
