Ex-Graham Hill; late suffix G IIA supplied by John Coombs of
Guilford; rare 'Maltese Cross' grille; very original and subject to a recent
re-commissioning; documented copy of original logbook confirming Hill
provenance
This late Land Rover Series IIA
represents a rare opportunity to acquire not only a highly desirable early
Series model, but also a genuine piece of British motoring and motorsport
history.
Most significantly, this petrol powered
suffix G IIA was supplied new to Formula One World Champion Graham Hill by his
close friend, manager and renowned racing driver John Coombs, who was also
godfather to Graham's son, World Champion Damon Hill.
Remarkably, the Land Rover still retains its original ‘Supplied by
Coombs’ plaque to the rear, while accompanying documentation includes copies of
the original buff logbook showing Graham Hill as the first owner, together with
old MOT certificates, owner's manuals and maintenance
literature.
Adding further rarity are two of the
most sought-after Series IIA features, the distinctive Maltese Cross grille,
fitted for only a brief production period, and the desirable ‘cat flap’ rear
door arrangement.
After many years in storage,
the vehicle has recently benefited from an extensive recommissioning programme.
Works include a fully rebuilt front axle with new swivels, bearings and seals,
replacement rear propshaft, renewed differential seals, parabolic springs, new
shock absorbers, comprehensive brake overhaul, replacement front dumb irons,
unleaded cylinder head conversion, new carburettor, fuel pump, fuel tank and
fuel lines, together with new clutch master and slave cylinders. Steering
components have also been renewed, while the original wheels have been
refurbished, powder coated and fitted with period-correct
tyres.
The bodywork has been sympathetically
preserved, retaining an attractive and honest patina. While the front seats have
been replaced, the original rear seats remain fitted. Showing a believed genuine
51,000 miles from new, this Series IIA runs and drives and is offered complete
with its original jack, spare ignition components and history
file.
A rare, highly original and historically
significant Land Rover with impeccable provenance.
