British Army’s ex-military XD model that also benefits
from the desirable REMUS upgrade; ever-dependable 300Tdi; internal roll
cage, snorkel, gun rack; rear-mounted spare wheel carrier;
complete with a bikini roof and the full military canvas
Developed
to meet the British Army’s demanding GS (General Service) requirements, the Land
Rover Wolf – designated XD for Extra Duty – was a heavily uprated evolution of
the civilian Defender. Built around a reinforced chassis with stronger axles,
upgraded suspension and simplified electrics, the Wolf was designed to survive
the sort of punishment that would quickly finish off a standard Defender.
Powered by the ever-dependable 300Tdi, it became
renowned for its toughness, ease of field repair and long service life, making
surviving examples increasingly sought after today.
This 1998 Wolf is a particularly
appealing one, being an ex-military XD model that also benefits
from the desirable REMUS upgrade, which includes the internal roll cage,
snorkel, gun rack and the correct rear-mounted spare wheel carrier
– all features that collectors like
to see retained.
Mechanically, it remains in the right sort of
order. The 300Tdi has been kept up to date with sensible maintenance, including
new batteries in 2022, a new master cylinder in 2021, and in 2020 a package of
work comprising a cambelt, crankshaft seal and fan belt. More recently, in 2024
it received a substantial £954 service invoice, covering a new exhaust, brake
pads, rear calipers and brake hoses – all good signs of ongoing
care.
The Wolf
comes with the V5C, MOT to March 2027, and four old MOT certificates, giving a
useful paper trail. As with many ex-MOD vehicles, it presents with the
purposeful, no-nonsense look that suits these
machines so well. Driven to the sale and was starting and running sweetly for
the photographs and video.
A proper Wolf, complete with its REMUS
equipment, reinforced underpinnings and a reassuring list of recent expenditure.
With military-spec Defenders continuing to gain
traction among enthusiasts, this one looks a strong and usable
example.
The perfect
summer and winter Land Rover with the benefit of a bikini roof and the full
military canvas.
