Very rare right-hand drive Jeep CJ-6; 'Typhoon' straight six engine;
upgraded off-road wheels and tyres; one of the world's most iconic
off-roaders
The rugged Jeep CJ-6 is a rare and
highly characterful long-wheelbase evolution of the classic CJ formula,
introduced as a more practical alternative to the CJ-5 with its extended chassis
offering improved versatility and load space.
Built on the same tried-and-tested mechanical underpinnings as its
shorter sibling, the CJ-6 retained the model’s renowned simplicity, durability
and go-anywhere capability, while adding a noticeably more usable and stable
platform for both work and leisure use.
This 1974
example is believed to be a desirable right-hand drive export model being
registered in the UK the same year, a specification typically supplied in
limited numbers for overseas markets.
Presented
in attention-grabbing bright red, decoding the data plate suggests the Jeep was
originally finished in ‘Fawn Beige’ over Buff trim. It is not known exactly when
the repaint was carried out, however the current colour scheme suits the Jeep’s
‘Tonka Toy’ appeal well and presents in fair condition throughout, showing the
expected minor marks and scuffs associated with an off-road vehicle, while
remaining smart and presentable overall.
The Jeep
has also been subject to a number of sensible upgrades, including off-road
wheels and Pirelli tyres (which does give the user some challenges!), along with
a three-inch suspension lift which further enhances its renowned
capability.
Under the bonnet, it is evident the vehicle has benefitted
from an alternator conversion together with a spin-on oil filter conversion for
ease of maintenance, while a tow bar with twin electrics is also
fitted.
The interior is equally characterful,
featuring smart black bucket and bench seating, complemented by an
American-style gear knob. All weather equipment is present and in good condition
as illustrated.
Only offered for sale due to lack
of use, the Jeep has been stored indoors as part of a small private collection
and has seen minimal use over the past year. As with any vehicle returning from
storage, it would likely benefit from a routine service and tune-up, although it
has been running and driving on site.
Prospective
bidders should note that the engine identification number does not correspond
with that shown on the V5, which is not uncommon for a working vehicle of this
age and nature, but doesn’t detract from the vehicle’s overall
appeal.
In summary, this Jeep presents as a rare
right-hand drive example of one of the world’s most iconic off-road vehicles,
enhanced by sensible upgrades and strong ‘Tonka Toy’ character. Complete with
weather equipment and tow bar, it remains a versatile classic suited to both
leisure and light utility use.
