Desirable '15 window' split screen camper; recent thorough mechanical
overhaul including rebuilt engine and refurbished gearbox; classic two-tone
colour scheme with 'rock and roll' bed; driven 30 miles to the
sale
The iconic Volkswagen Type 2 ‘Splitscreen’
Camper remains one of the most recognisable and beloved classics of the 1960s,
celebrated for its unmistakable styling, cheerful character and wonderfully
versatile nature. Combining simple air-cooled engineering with practical
accommodation and timeless appeal, the Splitscreen continues to offer some of
the most enjoyable and sociable classic motoring available.
This very smart example, manufactured in 1966, was imported into the
UK in 2015, believed to have been from the United States due to its left-hand
drive configuration and MPH speedometer. The car has only had two previous
keepers, including our vendor since import and is only sale due to lack of
use.
Since arriving in the UK, our vendor advises
that the camper has benefitted from a significant programme of upgrades and
maintenance, most notably a rebuilt 1,640cc twin-port engine conversion supplied
by the well-regarded VW engine company, complete with ancillaries and
carburettor.
In addition, a refurbished gearbox,
new clutch, and steering box from N2 engineering have been fitted, while the
reduction boxes were rebuilt at the same time. The braking system has also been
overhauled, along with brand new rear wheel bearings.
Overall, this camper presents in very smart condition. Externally,
the iconic two-tone paintwork retains a good depth of shine, with only the odd
mark and scratch noted in the photographs, none of which detract from its
overall appearance. The look is further enhanced by a surfer-style roof rack,
perfectly complementing its classic camper aesthetic.
Internally, the bench seat is free from any rips or tears, while the
headlining, door cards, and flooring are all presented in good condition. A
rock-and-roll bed is also fitted, along with a leisure battery, further
enhancing comfort and practicality for camping use.
Importantly for a VW camper of this age, the underside of the vehicle
presents in sound condition, as photographed, likely a result of spending much
of its life in sunnier climes.
In more recent
years, the vendor completed a 3,000-mile-plus round trip to Portugal and back
with no issues to report, a testament to the standard of the work and upgrades
carried out.
In summary, this ‘Splitty’ presents
as an excellent value example of one of the world’s most iconic campers,
finished in a highly attractive colour scheme and benefitting from a raft of
mechanical upgrades.
Having already proven its reliability on a
significant journey, this camper now appears ready for its next
adventure.
