Finished in bright red and fitted with a
wonderfully evocative 1980s velour interior, this 1982 Datsun 280ZX Targa has
covered 147,510 miles and shows just four former keepers on the current V5C. A
desirable T-top example, it is powered by the
smooth and long-legged 2,753cc straight-six engine, here coupled to a
5-speed manual gearbox, giving the car
the relaxed touring character for which the 280ZX has long been
admired.
The
Targa-top 280ZX was one of the most
distinctive variants of the model, offering the best of both worlds: the
rigidity and refinement of a coupe with the open-air enjoyment of a convertible. The
removable glass roof panels were a hallmark of late-70s and early-80s GT design, giving the car a
glamorous, trans-Pacific feel that set it apart from
its European rivals. With the roof sections stowed, the 280ZX takes on a
wonderfully relaxed, boulevard-cruiser character, perfectly matched
to its smooth straight-six and long-legged gearing.
The accompanying paperwork is
unusually rich and will appeal to Z-car enthusiasts. It includes an
original 280ZX Targa brochure, the substantial 1978 Nissan Motor Co.
191-page 280ZX book, the
owners’ manual, Z Club decals and details,
the current V5C, an old-style logbook, and a selection of
invoices. Three old MOT certificates are also present, adding to the sense of
long-term continuity.
A striking survivor of the
early-80s GT era, this bright red 280ZX
presents with real period charm. The interior, in particular, is a fabulous
throwback to the decade’s unmistakable style, and the car
retains the blend of comfort, character and effortless cruising ability that
made the 280ZX such a success in its day.
