12 year
ownership; Hard top and soft top included; well maintained; great patina; always
dry stored in the winter for the last 12 years; running, driving and stopping as
you would expect
This is a wonderfully
genuine Land Rover Series I 86-inch, first registered in July 1955 and
presenting today as an honest, usable example of one of Britain’s most iconic
early off-roaders. Now around 70 years old, this Series I has been enjoyed in
the way it was always intended—driven, appreciated, and woven into everyday life
rather than hidden away.
The current vendor has
cherished the vehicle for the past 12 years, during which time it has played a
much-loved role in family outings, from relaxed summer drives to local trips to
the pub. Sensibly, it has always been stored dry over the winter months, helping
preserve its condition. It remains a delightfully characterful machine to drive,
offering a nostalgic and engaging experience that modern vehicles simply cannot
replicate.
Mechanically, the vehicle has been
maintained with care throughout the vendor’s ownership, with attention given to
keeping it in good running order. Notable works include the fitment of a new
engine manifold and exhaust system, replacement dumb irons on the front leaf
springs, a replacement electric fuel pump, and the installation of new seats for
improved comfort. In addition, a reconditioned Smiths heater has been fitted,
enhancing usability in cooler conditions.
The
chassis is reported to be solid, with no apparent rust or signs of repair, which
is always a key consideration with early Land Rovers. Electrically, the vehicle
performs well, with lights and horn functioning as expected, and it is said to
start readily—typically first time with the use of a little
choke.
Currently fitted with a soft top, the sale
also includes the hard top, offering flexibility for different uses and seasons.
Accompanying the vehicle is a substantial history file, including V5 documents
tracing back to its first owner, reinforcing the impression that this is a
genuine and well-documented example.
This 1955
Land Rover Series I, powered by its 2286cc engine and having had a total of six
former keepers, represents a rare opportunity to acquire a usable and charming
classic. It stands not as a concours showpiece, but as something arguably more
appealing—an authentic, well-kept vehicle with real character, ready to be
enjoyed as it has been for decades.
