1961 Eriba
Puck “E” caravan; fitted with a more modern and up to date non-original chassis;
2 Berth; light weight and can be pulled with most classic cars; a very period
caravan that will complement any classic car
This characterful 1961 Eriba Puck “E” caravan, manufactured by Hymer,
presents a usable vintage tourer with notable mechanical updates. Finished in
attractive Milk White by Janus Paint Systems, this compact classic retains its
distinctive period charm while benefiting from a professionally mounted
replacement chassis.
Originally built to a
factory unladen weight of approximately 400 kg, the caravan body (original
chassis No. 1655) was removed and, in 2024, fitted onto a non-original chassis
sourced from a twin motorbike transporter. As a result, the caravan body now
sits as a passive load on the replacement frame rather than forming part of a
structural stressed chassis. The axle assembly is part of the newer frame and is
not the original Eriba design. This change may appeal to practical users seeking
updated running gear but should be noted by collectors where originality is a
consideration.
Running gear has seen recent
attention, with both wheel bearings replaced and now specified as imperial taper
roller type. The caravan rides on larger 14-inch wheels and benefits from three
new Kenda tyres fitted in January 2024. It has been in regular seasonal use
since June 2004, suggesting it remains a usable and enjoyed
example.
Inside, the layout is currently arranged
as two single berths, with the ability to convert into a double bed using the
included table and base boards. Electrical provision includes mains hook-up with
two mains sockets and one light. There is also a 12-volt off-grid system
designed to run from a car battery, powering three lights, two cigarette lighter
sockets, and one USB charging port. No battery is included; a 45Ah leisure
battery has previously provided around two weeks of light use, though buyers
intending regular camping may prefer a 75–110Ah unit.
Cooking is via a fitted single-hob camping gas burner. The caravan is
equipped with a levelling system, front jockey wheel, and two rear jockey posts.
A boat trailer winch has been fitted to the forward post to assist solo users
when pulling the caravan onto the tow ball.
The
pop-top elevating roof can be raised at either the front or the rear but not
both simultaneously due to missing fabric. The pop-top is therefore not fully
functional and weather sealing may be compromised; replacement tenting/fabric
will likely be required.
Offered strictly as
seen, this is an appealing opportunity to acquire a charming early Eriba Puck
with upgraded underpinnings. It may suit those seeking a usable vintage
micro-caravan rather than a fully original collector’s example. Viewing is
recommended to appreciate the condition and specification.
