Introduced in
1986, the XJ40 was a major improvement on the previous Series 3 XJ6 Saloon with
better build quality and a considerably stiffer structure which won it the
accolade of being the ‘Safest Car in Britain’.
It also got the new AJ6 engine to replace the old XK unit, offering
better performance and fuel economy with lower emissions. The 4-litre version of
the AJ6, as fitted to this car, has fuel injection and catalyst and produces
235bhp with silky smoothness and commendable fuel economy.
Reliable and well built, the XJ40 was available as a basic XJ6 with
round headlights, or the more luxurious Sovereign, as offered here. The higher
spec model gained distinctive rectangular headlights, optional leather seats,
air conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, ABS brakes, stainless steel window
surrounds and inlaid burr walnut trim. The XJ40 was replaced by the X300 in
1994.
First registered in September 1992, this
Jaguar Sovereign 4.0 is showing only 67,135 miles on the digital speedo but
sadly comes with no service history as the current owner bought it from a
deceased estate.
It has had seven former keepers
but had just two owners from 1996 – 2024, the first keeping it for over 12 years
and the second for over 15 years and they clearly looked after it extremely
well, judging by the condition of the car.
Notes
on file from the vendor state that it has just had four new tyres, new front
shock absorbers, new rear brakes, a new battery and a full
service.
It has an MOT until 19th
December 2026 which had just two advisories for worn tyres and binding rear
service brake which have both been attended to since. We are told that it drives
as well as it looks and it has certainly been running nicely as we have moved it
around on site, with healthy 4 bar oil pressure.
As you can see in the photos, it looks very smart for its
year/mileage with a lovely cream leather interior. Driven some 50 miles to the
sale, this low-mileage 4.0 Sovereign is ready for a new owner to
enjoy.
