Description

Fully restored around a new Heritage shell in the late-1990s and only 4,300 miles since; just three owners in the last 30 years; overdrive; a smart TR6 that is crying out for more regular use; driven to the sale

First registered in London in October 1973, this TR6 had just one owner from 1995 – 2013, a Mr I McTaggart of Dorset. Between 1995 and 1998 he treated the car to a complete nut-and-bolt restoration at vast expense, as detailed by many invoices on file. Much of the work was done by CTM Engineering of Hampshire and the rest by Southern Triumph Services of Bournemoth.

This included a new Heritage Shell supplied by Moss Europe of Richmond, hence the excellent state of preservation you see today. The chassis was shot-blasted, hot zinc sprayed, repainted and waxoiled.

The engine was fully rebuilt with a balanced crank assembly, gas-flowed and port matched cylinder head, 150bhp camshaft etc. The overdrive gearbox was also rebuilt and a new clutch kit fitted. All other mechanical aspects were also renewed or restored as required, including brakes, suspension, new wiring loom, fuel injection system etc.

The interior was retrimmed with black leather seat covers, new seat foams, new carpets, walnut dash, wood-rim steering wheel etc. It also got new bumpers, aluminium fuel tank, Kenlowe fan, new wheels and tyres plus much else besides.

Back on the road in February 1998, old MOTs show that it has only covered some 4,300 miles since. Mr McTaggart kept the car for the next 15 years (having the gearbox rebuilt again in 2009), finally selling it to a Reading gent in May 2013, the invoice showing that it cost £12,500.

Our vendor acquired the car via Brightwells in September 2018 at which point it was showing 79,416 miles on the clock. Seven years later and only 350 fine weather miles have been added to that total, the Triumph spending most of its time slumbering away in a nice dry garage alongside a couple of other equally nice classics owned by our vendor.

As you can see in the photos, it looks to be in good order throughout, both above and below, with an excellent body shell and very presentable paintwork with just the odd minor blemish here and there.

Driven to the sale from Shropshire, it has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on site, with healthy 50psi oil pressure. We did note that it pulls a little hesitantly from cold at low revs but seems to clear its throat and run sweetly at higher revs, no doubt through lack of use. The vendor tells us that it runs nicely once warmed up.

New Heritage Shells are no longer available and were fetching over £20k when you could last still find them many years ago.

On offer here at a fraction of the amount it would cost to restore today, this thoroughly rejuvenated TR6 now needs an enthuiastic new owner who can give it the more regular exercise that it deserves.
