A pampered 993 in super condition throughout; fabulous Turquoise
paintwork; Turbo spoiler; new Bilstein suspension; new brakes; new tyres; new
Dansk stainless steel exhaust; just serviced; ready to enjoy
With its wide
rear haunches, Coke-bottle hips and oval exhausts, the 993 is considered by many
to be the best looking 911 of all time. Launched in 1993 and remaining in
production until 1998, it was the last Porsche to feature an air-cooled engine
and the last to retain the classic 911 silhouette – giving it a special place in
the hearts of enthusiasts.
The good looks
continued inside with a re-designed interior featuring new seats, better heating
and ventilation, front airbags as standard and numerous other subtle upgrades.
More than just a pretty face, it was also the first 911 to handle safely on the
limit thanks to its wider track and the adoption of LSA multi-link rear
suspension attached to an all-alloy subframe. Lift off mid-bend and, instead of
flying off backwards into the scenery as earlier 911s were wont to do, the
993 just tucks in and holds the line.
Performance from the 268bhp
3.6-litre flat-six engine was suitably brisk, sprinting to 60mph in just 5.3
seconds on its way to a top speed of 168mph. The new engine featured lavish use
of exotic metals, such as magnesium for the fan housing, and a strengthened
camshaft along with lighter pistons – it also sounded magnificent with a
spine-tingling metallic bark.
Built like the
proverbial brick outhouse, it was also utterly dependable and is one of the few
supercars that you can reliably use every day, being capable of clocking up vast
mileages with minimal maintenance.
“All you
really need to know is that the 993 is a mesmerising, enchanting, brilliantly
usable and simply thrilling car to live with”, is how Evo sums it
up.
First registered in March 1996, this gorgeous
993 Carrera 2 has been used as its makers intended, covering some 134,800 miles
to date, not that you would know to look at it – the paint finish is little
short of flawless and you would look long and hard to find a single mark or
stonechip.
Our vendor, a Porsche GB Club member,
is a 993 fanatic and he searched far and wide to find this car. During his
five-year ownership it has been more pampered than driven, including a
professional glass-out repaint in the original Turquoise and replacement of
every single door and window seal – even the rubbers behind the exterior door
handles are new, as are the door check-straps and the rear bumper brackets (one
of the few weak points of the 993). The front windscreen is also new as are
the sunroof seals.
The entire braking system has
also been renewed or refurbished, the suspension is new and uprated to Bilstein
spec, the Dansk stainless steel exhaust is new, the geometry has all been set up
correctly and it rides on a matching set of new Continental Premium Contact
tyres.
Fitted with a Turbo rear spoiler, it also
has town-friendly Tiptronic S transmission and air conditioning. A tailored soft
stretch Porsche 993 indoor car cover is also present along with a space-saver
spare wheel and toolkit/wheel-changing kit.
Although the handbooks are present, the original service book has
gone astray but our vendor has had the car serviced annually by 911 specialists
Zuffenhaus of Wythall and Cotswold Porsche of Toddington who commented: "This is
a nice example of a 993 which is clearly well looked after". The last
service was in May this year since when it has only covered 100 miles (see
photos).
There is also an invoice for a major service by Strasse of
Shipley in September 2018 at 133,055 miles meaning this car has been serviced
seven times in the last 1,800 miles which equates to a 260-mile service interval
– pretty obsessive by any standards!
Flying
through its MOT in July this year with no advisories recorded, it also comes
with 9 old MOTs which show that it has only covered 2,600 miles since 2012.
Starting instantly and driving beautifully as we
have moved it around on site, this pampered Porsche looks like a canny buy at
the guide price suggested, the air-cooled 911 market being seemingly immune to
the downturn affecting most other classics of late.
