Description
Just two owners in the last 22 years; only 100 miles on rebuilt
engine; loads of new parts and various upgrades; power steering; a really
attractive example of this sporting estate at a bargain guide price
Just like the
Ford Mustang Fastback is forever associated with Steve McQueen, so the Reliant
Scimitar GTE is always linked to Princess Anne (she owned at least half-a-dozen
in the 1970s, all with the registration number 1420 H). In fact Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh
also had one to replace his 3-Litre Lagonda, Prince Edward Duke of Kent owned
one, as did lesser mortals Dickie Davis, Noel Edmonds, George Lazenby and Rita
Tushingham.
Launched as the SE5 in 1968, this was
replaced by the wider and more spacious SE6 in 1976 and by the SE6A in 1977
which had improved brakes and suspension and retained the 3.0 Essex V6 which was
replaced by the less-torquey 2.8 Cologne engine for the final SE6B. Production
of all models came to an end in 1986.
Dating from
October 1979, this SE6A had one owner from 2003 – 2022 who spent loads of money
on the car but never actually drove it. Invoices for this period include: new
brake servo, master cylinder, brake pipes, rebuilt calipers etc. The cooling
system was overhauled with a new radiator, water pump, pipes and belts whilst
the suspension benefitted from new bushes, trunnions, ball joints and front
wheel bearings. It also had new head lamps, fog lamps and rear light clusters
along with five new tyres and a new stainless steel fuel tank
Our vendor acquired the car via Brightwells in
2022 and has spent much more on this GTE since. This included converting it from
auto to manual overdrive. He also had the 3.0 V6 fully rebuilt with new pistons,
bearings, reground crank etc. The crankshaft and ancillaries were balanced by a
specialist at an additional cost of £650.
Some
upgrades recommended by the owner’s club were also incorporated, including all
metal camshaft gears, high capacity oil pump, upgraded cooling system,
electronic ignition, sports coil etc. A new set of carpets were also fitted
along with new door and rear hatch seals. It also has the desirable option of
power steering.
Since the engine was rebuilt this
GTE has only covered around 100 miles and will require a careful running-in
period for another few hundred miles before the performance is exploited to the
full.
As you can see in the photos, this freshly
rejuvenated Scimitar looks very smart and has been starting promptly and running
nicely on site, with good 70psi oil pressure.
On
offer here at well under half the amount that it owes our vendor, it is only
reluctantly for sale due to health reasons. Someone could get a real bargain at
this price so make sure you come and see it!
