Description
Effectively two owners from new, the first for 32 years; 86,890 miles
indicated; engine rebuilt at 79,600 miles; in storage from 2002 - 2019; highly
original; what a find!
Launched in
1984, the VW Golf GTi MkII carried on where the immortal GTi MkI had left off,
instantly becoming the most desirable ‘hot hatch’ of the
Eighties.
Available as a three- or five-door
hatchback, it was powered by a fuel-injected 8v 1.8-litre developing 112bhp and
shot to 60mph in just 8.1 seconds with a top speed of 112mph. Handling was
superb, as was build quality, and these tough little sportscars can rack up huge
mileages with ease.
Supplied new by Martins of
Basingstoke in November 1987, this highly original GTi three-door has had just
three owners, the first being the owner of the Martins dealership who kept it in
his name for 11 years and the second being a company that we are told was also
owned by Martins who kept it for 21 years.
It
shows 86,890 miles on the clock which is believed to be correct and is borne out
by the general condition of the car. Sadly there are no stamps in the service
book other than the PDI service but there is an invoice for an engine rebuild by
Martins in September 2000 at 79,638 miles, including a reground crank, new main
and big end bearings, new timing belt etc, with £1,296 spent on parts alone. It
also had a new wiper motor and sundry other recommissioning parts at the same
time, photos showing the car up on a ramp with all the wheels
off.
Many old MOTs and tax discs show that it was
in regular use up until 2002 when it had covered 85,000 miles. It was then kept
in dry storage for 17 years, our vendor acquiring the car in early 2019 to join
his collection of Modern Classics. He went right through the car and gave it a
service and it has barely been driven since.
Flying through its MOT in June 2020 and April 2022 with no advisories
recorded, it was MOT’d again in January this year which it passed with just a
few minor advisories (rear brake pads wearing thin; rear exhaust deteriorated).
As you can see in the photos, this GTi is in
remarkably original condition with a smart interior and no rust that we could
see. The paintwork looks largely original and has gone slightly flat in
places – no doubt a good machine polish would help but a sympathetic repaint
would get it looking showroom fresh again.
We are
told that the car runs and drives well and it has certainly being starting
promptly and running nicely as we have moved it around on site. Only reluctantly
for sale due to an impending house move and consequent loss of storage, this
iconic Hot Hatchback is a proper time capsule and could be turned into a real
show-stopper should the new owner feel so inclined.
