Lot Ended
Description
From a deceased estate; magnificent machine converted into a Mulliner
style drophead; extensive restoration circa.2016
Part of a private collection
of vehicles that Brightwells have been selling in a few auctions in the last
couple of years since the unfortunate passing away of the owner in 2021. Three
of which are being offered in this auction.
This elegant
Bentley is in drophead form in the style of Mulliner. Converted many years ago
by Pilkingtons, it was first registered as a coupe to a Shipping Tycoon family
in Newcastle. Only a few years later another wealthy shipping family, which is
better known these days as Seven Sea Cod Liver Oil!
There is evidence
in the file that the Bentley was in the USA for a period of time in the 1980s
and then brought back to the UK c.1990. It may have been converted by Pilkington
specifically for the American market. The hood is powered by a switch under the
steering column and seemed to operate nicely when taking these photographs –
folding the frame snugly behind the rear seats.
During the early
2000s, it seems to have a regular MOT history but no big invoices. In 2015/2016
though, it was the subject of a painstaking restoration to the highest standard.
This included replacing: the lower sections of the rear wings with custom made
panels; the inner and outer wheel arches; the hood well and boot floor; and the
rear body mounts. New flexible brake hoses have also been fitted, as have
anti-burst door locks, as per the original Mulliner model. On completion of the
bodywork, the S3 was taken back to bare metal and repainted in the graceful tone
of Bentley Venusian Grey. The refurbishment was completed by the installation of
a new hood and carpets.
Shortly after this, the
Bentley found its way into the hands of our vendors family. It has been dry
stored but not regularly driven so we have not yet driven it at Brightwells.
There is power, which does operate the windows, hood and does turn the engine
but due to potentially low fluid levels, we have not fired her up at the time of
writing. It should not take too much as it was last successfully put through an
MOT in 2022 showing no advisories.
A vast vehicle in every way so
if road presence and elegance is what you are after, keep
bidding…
