1906 Salcombe Yawl 'FOAM'
Now No
Reserve
Stunning prototype Salcombe-built Yawl;
recently restored and painted; sails unused; ready to rig and go; room for the
whole family
'Foam' was apparently built in 1906
by the Dornom Brothers for Andrew McIlwraith, the donor of Cliff House to the
Salcombe Yacht Club and town. Press reports from 1910 and 1911 list Foam and
McIlwraith winning the class for boats not exceeding 20 foot for both
years.
There is another pre-War record of Foam
in the 20 foot waterline class in the 1925 Regatta, sailed by I Jennings who is
believed to have been McIlwraith’s son-in law.
Sail numbers were allocated to the Yawls in 1926 and Foam was given
Y1. Foam is said to be one of the first, if not the very first Salcombe
Yawl. She was re-rigged in the 1930’s as an A-class and went on to win
frequently before it got banned for being too fast!.
Foam was restored by
David Carter in 1999 and rigged back to a gaff rigged yawl. The last owner
had the boat maintained by Banger Boats in Salcombe and the vendor acquired
it through them. He believes that the previous owner had the boat
well looked after but never really used it and thinks the sails are
all new and un-used but he himself has never had them
up.
The boat was repainted and varnished before
taking position undercover with him, coming with a simple trailer and a
boat cover as well as the sails and rigging.
He
got very excited when he saw it simply because it is such a lovely
thing. There is something about a Salcombe Yawl and the thought of owning
the first one really caught his attention. Sadly though, with three
small children and a non-sailing wife, Foam really needs to be out on the
water being used properly.
Bidders are advised that this Yawl does not
comply with the current regulations of the Salcome Yawl Association and
therefore cannot be used in their competitions...
