1928 Singer Junior

A fine quality light vintage car with OHC engine and four-wheel brakes; show-winning condition; recent new hood and thorough service; reluctant sale due to ill health

The Singer Junior was unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1926. Its 848cc 2-bearing OHC engine produced 16.5bhp at 3,250 revs and was mated via a cone clutch to a 3-speed gearbox in a conventional chassis.

Performance was on a par with the competition, with a top speed of 45mph and around 40mpg. A very successful model, with production not dropping below 6,000 per year, the Junior helped elevate Singer to the number three sales slot by 1928.

First registered in Middlesex in February 1928, little is known of this Junior’s early history but the buff logbook shows that it was resident in Essex by 1955, later moving to the West Country and then to Yorkshire. No fewer than 32 old tax discs and 27 old MOTs show that the car has always been in light, regular use, clocking up some 9,500 miles since 1977 – always a good sign with an old car!

In 2004 a gentleman from Keighley bought the car from The School Garage in Buxton for £12,950 and was to keep it until his death in 2020. During his ownership it went to various shows, twice winning awards at the Singer National Day gathering – Best Vintage Car in 2012 and Best in Class in 2017 (photos, rosettes and documents on file). A good file of notes and invoices show regular upkeep in recent years, including a magneto overhaul, re-lining of the brakes, two new bearings fitted to the gearbox, changing of the crown-wheel and pinion and repairs to the exhaust/inlet manifold. There is also some useful technical literature relating to the model and an original owner’s handbook.

Our vendor acquired the car last year and has improved it still further, including fitting a new mohair hood and hood bag, giving it a thorough service and replacing various minor parts as detailed in invoices on file. Sadly he is no longer in the best of health, hence the car’s appearance in this sale.

Starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on site, with healthy oil pressure, this lovely old Singer is an interesting alternative to an Austin 7 and is no doubt capable of scooping more silverware on the show circuit, should the fortunate new owner feel so inclined.
