1979 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 Series 2

Rust-free South African import; in need of
mechanical attention
Launched to a
disbelieving world in 1968, the Jaguar XJ6 still ranks as one of the most
significant cars ever made. It's astonishing standards of handling, comfort and
refinement, coupled with the traditional Jaguar attributes of performance and
value for money, immediately made every other car on the road look over-priced
and old-fashioned.
Jaguar refreshed the XJ range in 1973 with the
introduction of the Series II. The new car featured a sleeker new body shell
which had a slimmer front grille, new front air intake below the bumper, new
lights and a revised interior. At first both short and long wheelbase versions
were available, however all cars carried the long wheelbase after 1975. Although
worldwide production of the Series II ended in mid-1979 to make way for the
Pininfarina-styled Series III, it remained in production at Jaguar’s Cape Town
factory in South Africa until 1981.
This
particular Series II 4.2 was first registered in Cape Town on 1st
January 1980. Being a South African made model, it has the cloth interior that
was typically fitted to cars in hot climates where leather trim was prone to dry
out and crack.
Imported to the UK
in December 2017 with all duties paid, it was acquired by our vendor in January
2018 to join a collection of cars, passing its first MOT in March 2018 and again
in May 2018. It was then put into storage until October 2021 when it was
submitted for another MOT which it failed: ‘windscreen washer not working; stop
lamps all not working; n/s/r service brake excessively
binding’.
In the meantime it had also
become increasingly difficult to start, so it is being sold here as a non-runner
- the engine spins over easily but it won't start. As you can see in the photos,
the bodywork and structure appears to be in excellent shape with none of the
rust that usually affects Jaguars of this era. Not yet UK registered, it does
come with a South African Certificate of Title and a NOVA reference to prove
that all duties have been paid.
On
offer here at no reserve as a straightforward recommissioning project, it has
the makings of a very smart car indeed.
