2007 Pilgrim Sumo

Completed and offered for SVA in March 2007 this appealing Pilgrim Sumo MkII Cobra replica would no doubt fool most into thinking its ‘the real deal’ so good does it look and sound.

Understood to have been completed by Absolute Horsepower Ltd of Wellington, Somerset (on behalf of the original owner) who are well-known in the Cobra replica world, the car is finished in Ford Imperial Blue and traditional white Le Mans stripes.  Under the shapely fibreglass bodywork, we find the beating heart, a Rover 3.5 litre V8 from a Range Rover Classic which is believed to have been uprated with fitment of a Race/Rally cam (from Demon Tweeks) and improved oil feed to the timing chain. 

The (reconditioned) gearbox, we gather is from a Range Rover but the rest of the running gear comes from a Ford Granada.

An invoice on file dated June 2007 recorded 142Bhp on a dyno run at the time.  Since then, the car has continued to be improved by our vendor, who purchased the car in late 2007 by which time the car had covered 600 miles.  Since then, our man has fitted reconditioned heads, uprated the suspension and improved the brakes as well as fitting a new Weber carb and new GTD5 wheels.

We also find twin four-branch stainless side exit exhausts, leather interior, replacement steering wheel and useful tonneau cover, for if and when it rains (it is the UK..)

The history file includes the V5C (registered as a Pilgrim Sumo with 3500cc engine) an old V5C, some info about the car from 2007 and images, more recent images of the car, a selection of bills for parts and minor works undertaken including purchase of the wheels for £1,539, works to the carb, fitment of a new clutch in 2010 and supply of new springs, dampers and wishbones for the front end at a cost of £527 (hand-written receipt).

We also find the original Pilgrim order form confirming it to be a MkII chassis package for Granada mechanics with a Rover V8 engine and bonnet with air scoop. Another document lists the major parts on the car and the likely donor source including the Granada diff, rear suspension, Cortina steering rack, Morris Ital pedal box and various other new/aftermarket other parts too.

The original galvanised Pilgrim chassis looks to have been purchased in July 1996 when the build began with the car nearing completion in 2006 when Absolute Horsepower Ltd get involved and paint the body at a cost of £2,550 and then undertake work to get the car to the SVA standard with various bills chronicling their activity through 2006 and 2007.

The current MOT is valid until mid-April 2022 and recorded no advisories and shows the car has enjoyed regular use since 2007 clocking up from the 600 miles at purchase to c.18,000 shown today, proving these can be as usable as you let them, or make them.

Ready to be enjoyed, this Pilgrim Sumo should reward its next owner with smiles per mile with more than enough poke from the Rover V8, an epic soundtrack and looks to match.
