1963 Hillman Super Minx Convertible

Recent new hood and service; rare Convertible model that runs very sweetly 

In production from 1931 to 1970, the Hillman Minx was constantly revised throughout its life and was available in a bewildering number of versions. The Super Minx came out in October 1961 and was a slightly larger and more upmarket model aimed at families who found the standard Minx a little too small.
The new, sharply-styled body had American design influences (wraparound windscreen, hooded headlights and tail fins) while the engine had grown to 1.6-litres and 62bhp which gave it a top speed of 85mph. Sold mainly as a saloon, the Super Minx was also available as an estate and, from 1962 until June 1964, it was also briefly available as a convertible although it is thought that only a few hundred were sold making survivors rare and sought after today.
First registered in June 1963, this Convertible looks most appealing in metallic red with a matching red interior. In 2019 it was treated to a new hood by Cromer Classic Cars of Norfolk who also carried out various other jobs including removing the engine to paint the engine bay, fitting new propshaft UJs, a new clutch release bearing and fuel filter at a cost of £1,966.
More recently, in July 2020 it had a service at Westley Garage of Birmingham with new spark plugs, distributor cap and attention to the carburettor at a cost of £819. Other than that there is very little history with the car apart from an old MOT which expired in May this year with just one advisory for a minor exhaust leak which has since been rectified.
Starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on site, this rare and attractive Convertible looks like a lot of fun for a modest outlay.
