1939 Rover 10 P2 Saloon

Charmingly original; recent new tyres and clutch; few owners; runs beautifully

Synonymous with high-quality cars since the late 1920s, Rover occupied a comfortable niche in the market supplying luxurious and beautifully built machines to the middle-class motorist who demanded something a cut above the average. Not particularly fast or ostentatious, they had a peculiarly British combination of understated elegance and engineering excellence.
The Rover Ten came out in 1927 and originally had a light Weymann fabric body and an OHV 1,185cc engine rated at 25hp. From 1930 it could also be had with a handsome all-steel body by Pressed Steel. The final version was the P2 which ran from 1933 – 1947 and had a larger 1,389cc engine with a new cylinder head which raised the power to 48bhp, allied to a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top two gears.
This charmingly original P2 was first registered in June 1939 and has had just five owners, according to the V5C. Sadly there is precious little history with the car but it must have led a sheltered life to date judging by the good state of preservation. The door cards look like they have been replaced fairly recently but other than that the brown leather interior looks to be nice and original, even retaining the tool kit under the dash and the wheel-changing kit in the boot.
A few invoices show that it had four new Excelsior tyres in 2015 which cost £507 including tubes, and in October 2019 it was fitted with a new clutch, new flywheel bearing, new door top seals and a new windscreen rubber which cost £374 in parts and £324 in fitting. A parts catalogue and an original lubrication chart are also present.
Starting easily and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, it retains that silky quality feel that is the hallmark of Rovers from this era. A most appealing car all round, it makes all feel well with the world the moment you slip behind the wheel.
