1970 Morgan 4/4 Sports
Professional ground-up
restoration on a factory-supplied galvanised chassis; 1,700cc Crossflow - tuned
and Dyno'd; full weather equipment; fabulous condition; MOT May 2022;
essentially a new Morgan
This stunning 4/4 was acquired by the
vendor as a completely dismantled 1970 4/4 Sport which he discovered in Grimsby
in November 2020. A retired Morgan engineer and high profile Morgan racer, he
set-to rebuilding this car as a lockdown project, completing the job in
June 2021 - quick work indeed.
Starting with a brand-new, Morgan factory
supplied galvanised 4/4 chassis, he fitted a new zero camber frame front and a
brand new ash-frame body panelled in aluminium.
All aspects were covered,
from new cupro-nickel brake pipes, stainless flexi pipes and a new
master cylinder to a new clutch, electric fuel pump and
hoses.
The new body was completely retrimmed, including a new
hood and tonneau plus fully refurbished side screens with new plastic windows
and vinyl covering. The car was also fitted with retractable seat belts.
The exterior has been professionally painted Jaguar Indigo blue.
Detail
work abounds, with a fully prepared dash (and lovely period spoked
steering wheel) and a scuttle roll-bar which adds so much to torsional
stiffness.
The 1,700cc crossflow engine was rebuilt to GT
specifications. It had new pistons and was carefully ported. The crank and
flywheel were balanced and the block fitted with a fast road cam although it
still idles nicely we are told. A twin choke carburettor is fitted, the
engine having covered approximately 5,000 miles post-rebuild in a Ford Escort.
Lewis Racing did the work.
The gearbox, rear axle and steering box
were carefully checked and the original bulkhead, tool box and inner wings were
bead blasted and sprayed gloss black. The five wheels were
refurbished, powder coated silver and fitted with new tyres - fully
balanced of course.
The instruments and switches were refurbished
and the speedo set to zero, since when the car has covered just a few
shake-down miles.
Since then, it has flown through a 'no advisory'
MOT which expires at the end of May next year, although the car
is of course both Tax and MOT exempt.
The paperwork file includes a
dyno print-out for the engine when it was installed in the Escort,
showing a healthy 133bhp at just over 6,000 rpm and a remarkably flat
torque-curve, which peaks at 4,500rpm. It all makes for a very nice road
car indeed.
Restored and prepared to a very high standard, this 1970
4/4 Sport is a most appealing proposition, especially now that the
Morgan factory have ceased to produce the 4/4 on a traditional chassis, which if
you could buy one, would be significantly more expensive than the modest guide
price on this car offered today.
