1982 Mini 95 Van
Recently restored; later
998cc engine fitted; excellent underneath; ready for work or
play
Recently voted the second most influential car of the 20th
Century (pipped only by the Ford Model T and beating the VW Beetle), the Mini
broke cover in 1959 and proved so enormously popular with the buying public that
it remained in production for an astonishing 41 years: small car; big punch!
In addition to the saloon versions, BMC/BL cashed in with
a number of other body styles including the Traveller, Moke, Pickup and the Van
(dubbed Mini 95 from 1978). The latter was based on the longer platform of the
Traveller and had a load capacity of 0.25 tons and a 0.95 ton gross vehicle
weight, hence the 95 name. Available from 1960 until 1982, it was classed as a
commercial vehicle and therefore avoided sales tax, making it a cheaper
alternative to a car as well as a nippy goods vehicle. This handy tax dodge
helped ensure that over 520,000 were sold.
Dating from August 1982, this 95 Van must be among the
last batch made and although it comes with precious little history we are told
that it was restored a few years ago including new door skins, A panels and work
to the rear floor followed by a full respray, as evidenced by some photos on
file. We are also told that it has been fitted with a later and peppier 998cc
engine, hence the alloy rocker cover.
Starting easily and driving very nicely as we have moved
it around on site, it shows good 60psi oil pressure and appears to be in very
good order throughout with a particularly clean underbody. Although it no longer
needs one, it has an MOT until November 2021 with no advisories recorded.
