Description
1955 Land Rover Series I 86in
Mostly original;
only five recorded keepers since at least 1978; part of a private collection
since 1999; stored undercover for most of this time
Originally registered
as CJM 569, this Land Rover was assigned its current plate in 1989 when it was
acquired by its previous keeper, until passing on to our vendor in 1999 to join
his substantial collection of unusual vehicles.
Apart from the
registration, much of the car seems in an untouched and original state,
including a few features that suggest it may have had a military background at
one point. Obviously showing the marked war department jerry cans to the front,
but also displaying the distinctive rear and front bumpers, lifting loops under
the un-chromed headlights and the indicators perched above the wings. The
chassis appears to have had one small amount of welding on an outrigger,
otherwise it looks pretty sound. The old logbook on file has the number of
owners ‘since 1978,’ therefore it is possible this is when it formerly entered
civilian service.
An 86in chassis and a
changed plate means this will not be the sky-high price of an original 80in 1948
machine, but this does still have the original petrol engine and shows an
original tattiness that we all like. An MOT is not legally necessary of course
but potential bidders should be aware that we believe it has not passed one
since 2002 and between then and now it has not been regularly driven. It did
start and drive for our photographs though and while in the current collection,
has been kept undercover, away from the elements.
