The Ford Escort XR3 is one of the
most recognisable hot hatches of the 1980s, combining sporting looks with lively
performance and becoming a firm favourite with a generation of enthusiasts.
Increasingly rare today, original, low-owner examples are particularly
appealing.
First
registered in April 1982, this three-door Escort XR3 is powered by the 1,597cc
engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and is finished in attractive
metallic blue with the distinctive XR3 sports interior. The odometer currently
displays 33,802 miles, which appears to be the mileage covered by the
replacement engine, with the speedometer seemingly reset when the engine was
changed. The car has had just one former keeper before the current vendor, who
has owned it since August 2019.
The vendor advises that the engine was replaced
at 86,750 miles, meaning the replacement unit has now covered 33,802
miles.
The
Escort presents as a remarkably original example, with some age-related marks
and slight damage to one of the wings. It has been off the road for the last few
years and, while it starts, drives and stops when cold, the vendor informs us
that after approximately six miles the engine appears to cut out and will not
restart until it has cooled down. The vendor suspects the issue may be related
to the ignition system, although further investigation will be required. A
period of recommissioning is therefore recommended before regular road
use.
The vendor
advises that the Escort was driven on site for photography and filming, where it
started, drove and stopped as expected.
With just two keepers from new, a replacement
engine and a highly original appearance, this early XR3 represents an appealing
opportunity to acquire an increasingly collectible hot hatch and would make an
excellent basis for sympathetic recommissioning and continued
enjoyment.
